(Al-Bireh,6/8/2014): Mr. Peter Maurer, the ICRC President, acknowledged the work of PRCS’ teams. He called for an end to violence as well as to the targeting of civilians and medical service providers.
At a Press Conference held yesterday in front of PRCS’ Al Quds Hospital in Gaza City in the presence of Dr. Younis Al Khatib, PRCS President, Mr. Maurer, said that his visit to the Gaza Strip aims at assessing urgent humanitarian needs and at seeing for himself the situation on the ground. He also confirmed that the ICRC will contribute to the alleviating of the suffering of the victims.
As for his part, Dr. Al Khatib welcomed Mr. Maurer and his accompanying delegation, lauding cooperation between the two organiztions in the provision of humanitarian and health services. He also paid tribute to the families of the dead people and wished a speedy recovery to the wounded. He highlighted the patriotic and humanitarian role that PRCS continues to play to assist affected populations and provide help to the wounded.
After the press conference, Dr. Al Khatib and Mr. Maurer visited a number of the injured in the PRCS Al Quds Hospital, and visited Majida Al Waseela School to the West of Gaza City. The School currently hosts entire families from Al Shaja’iyeh, Al Zaytoun and Beit Hanoun whose homes and properties were destroyed during the 30-day Israeli attack on the Gaza Strip. They both oversaw the distribution of relief aid to displaced families in that school. 120 families benefited from these relief items which include mattresses, blankets and drinking water, inter alia.
