(Gaza, 19/12/2015): The PRCS/Khan Younis wheelchair basketball team won the 2015 Gaza Strip Wheelchair Basketball Championship. Eight Clubs competed in the Championship organized by the Palestinian Paralympic Committee under the auspices of ICRC and in cooperation with Gaza Municipality’s Artificial Limbs and Polio Center.
The final match was contested between PRCS and Al Salam Club, with PRCS winning the cup with a one-point lead.
Organized at the Sa’ed Sayel Hall in Gaza City, the Championship is the fruit of relentless efforts aimed at providing support to clubs catering to persons with physical disabilities in the Gaza Strip. It aims at ensuring community integration of persons with disabilities and at encouraging beneficiaries from the Artificial Limbs and Polio Center to take part in sport.
“Words alone cannot express how happy we are to have won this Championship. A true team spirit prevailed among us and our players were really good. This is how we secured the cup this year just like we did last year”, a PRCS’ team member said.
As for the Captain of Al Salam Club, he said: “I am satisfied with my team’s performance. We lost by just one point but next year we’ll play even better and we will win”.
The Championship marked the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (December 3rd). It highlighted the psychological and social impact of sport on persons with disabilities as it helps them exceed their potential and overcome barriers.
